Berkeley Path Wanderers Association

problem

Non-profit path restoration and preservation group voted to discontinue its paper newsletter and replace it with a more cost-effective, attractive, and content-rich version of their monthly eNewsletter.

objectives

  • Redesign and expand existing eNewsletter.
  • Develop a long-term communication strategy to keep the membership base informed and engaged.
  • Put a system of procedures in place for board members and volunteers to maintain the eNewsletter and generate compelling content.

process

Generated proposal for board approval outlining plan to achieve outreach goals. Compiled research on other non-profit, environmental eNewsletters. Developed user stories detailing different reasons members open and use the email. Identified key content categories such as feature story, events, donations, etc. Determined which content will be recurring and which will change each month.

ideation

Created wireframe prototype to organize content and finalize placement.

solution

Beginning January 2017 the costly and time-consuming quarterly paper newsletter was replaced by an email version. With my assistance, a MailChimp template was developed and a volunteer was trained to oversee the project. A calendar was created to coordinate changing content and assign tasks.
